DIRECT HIRE AUTHORITY: This position is being filled using Direct-Hire Authority (5 CFR 337.205) for this occupation.HelpDuties Major Duties: This position has three basic responsibilities: transport of in-patients to and from acute care areas secondary MET Code/Code Blue response and clinical/administrative support for the delivery of acute and non-acute care in the ED These duties are not all inclusive and require the demonstration of appropriate training and documented competence prior to performance. All candidates must have current Basic Life Support (BLS) training before they may begin working within the ED. Once competency is established the incumbent may assist with related patient care procedures under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) or physician as appropriate. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) will be provided and will be obtained within 90 days of onboarding. Care in the Emergency Department: Clinical Duties may include but are not limited to: Obtains and documents patients vital signs recognizes and reports abnormal values to RN or ED physician staff Initiates cardiac monitoring correctly and is able to print rhythm strips or vital sign history prepares patient for and obtains 12 lead ECGs; provides privacy and emotional support during test and Independently recognizes certain abnormalities in the ECG strip e.g. premature ventricular contractions tachycardia bradycardia ventricular fibrillation etc. takes appropriate action and notifies the RN or physician immediately performs venipuncture Collects labels and sends laboratory specimens performs Foley catheter insertions/irrigations enemas visual acuity testing and performance of routine tracheotomy care uses S-BAR format to verbally report and/or document in the medical record. Administrative duties: Assists with answering phone and placing calls/pages as needed greets and assists arriving patients/families/visitors/ambulances and directs them to the appropriate treatment area and participates in keeping the patient tracking board updated (EDIS system).Collaborates with other technicians RNs and Providers in the assigned area and keeps them apprised of technical changes new equipment and actual or potential difficulties that may effect the unit. Intra-hospital Transport: Independently transports monitored/non-monitored patients to diagnostic procedures or to/from inpatient units within the facility as directed by supervisory RN uses S-BAR communication and appropriate documentation to report their observation and care of Veteran during transport to and from diagnostic or care area will initiate cardiopulmonary resuscitation according to AH.A. standards; maintains BLS and ACLS guidelines and cleans stretchers wheelchairs and equipment according to policy and procedures. On-Station Emergencies: Provides secondary response to MET Code / Code Blue emergency situations within the facility and/or on the facility grounds and is expected to assist other designated Code Team members to determine the nature extent and seriousness of the patients condition. Work Schedule: Anticipated 9AM - 9PM with rotating weekends Position Description Title/PD#: Intermediate Care Technician/PD019530 Physical Requirements: The work requires the Health Technician to be mobile throughout the Emergency Department and medical center as needed involving standing walking bending pushing and lifting (moderately heavy). GS-6 grade level: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-5 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge skills and abilities (KSAs) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience includes: monitoring vital signs administering medications assessing body systems monitoring life support equipment and implementing care plans and knowledge and skill sufficient to give injections catheterize irrigate suction and provide chest care (deep breathing coughing etc.) to patients. OR Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must demonstrate the following; Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required above GS-5 only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. One full year of graduate education meets the requirements for GS-7. One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time study requirement. Knowledge / experience with Dialysis: ability to operate monitor and calibrate dialysis equipment is desirable but not required. To calculate first identify the percentage of required education you have earned (when substituting you cannot use the first 60 semester hours that you earned). Then identify the percentage of required experience you possess. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify at the GS-XX.
